Windows

Windows are what's open right now. They're your current working set — like tabs in a browser, but smarter. Close them anytime; nothing gets lost. Windows are ephemeral. The things inside them are permanent.

The rule#

Windows are temporary. Entities are forever.

Closing a Window never deletes the entity inside it. The entity continues to exist, with its full content, history, and metadata. The Window was just a view into it.

Opening a Window#

A Window opens whenever you:

• click an entity in the sidebar
• pick a result from search
• ask River AI to "open my tasks for today"
• follow a link in a chat message
• click a notification

Windows can show any entity — docs, sheets, PDFs, mail threads, agents, even other Spaces — and they pick the right App to render that entity.

Arranging Windows#

Within a Space you can:

• Tile Windows side-by-side
• Stack them as tabs in the same pane
• Pop one out into a floating panel
• Move them between Spaces by dragging into the Space switcher

Every layout is remembered. When you reopen the Space, the Windows return to where they were.

Multiple Windows on the same entity#

Two Windows can show the same entity at once — for example, the same doc open in two Spaces, or open in two Windows side-by-side so you can compare different sections. Edits made in one Window appear instantly in the other, because both are reading from the same Y.js document underneath.

SpaceChat as a Window#

The AI sidebar is a special, persistent Window in every Space. You can collapse it when you don't need it, and expand it when you do. Conversations are scoped to the Space — your project Space won't show your personal Space's chat history.

Tips#

• Use Cmd K to summon a Window for any entity by name.
• Pin a Window to keep it open even when switching Spaces.
• When a Space gets cluttered, close all Windows with Cmd Shift W. Nothing is lost — every entity stays where it lives.
