Billing & Usage

This page covers how billing works for River accounts. For pricing tiers, see Pricing & Plans.

How River charges#

River bills two things:

  1. Subscription — a flat monthly fee per plan (Basic, Standard, Premium)
  2. AI usage — metered consumption of AI models, against a monthly budget that resets each cycle

Beyond your plan's included AI budget, you can switch to Pay As You Go to keep using AI at the same public rates with no monthly fee — or upgrade to a higher plan with a larger budget.

Plans#

Plan Price AI budget
Free $0 Starter only
Pay As You Go $0/mo Pay only for what you use
Basic $14/mo $15 AI/mo
Standard $36/mo $45 AI/mo
Premium $100/mo $140 AI/mo

All paid plans support unlimited team members. There is no per-seat charge; the team shares the org's AI budget.

What's metered#

Resource Rate (public)
Fastest text model $1.50 input / $7.50 output per 1M tokens
Expert text model $7.50 / $37.50 per 1M tokens
Genius text model $12.50 / $62.50 per 1M tokens
Uncensored text model $0.50 / $1.25 per 1M tokens

What happens when you hit the cap#

Your plan's monthly AI budget resets on your billing date. If you exceed it:

  • Pay As You Go — switches automatically (if enabled), continues at public rates
  • Upgrade — bump the plan up; the new budget takes effect immediately
  • Stop — AI calls pause until your next reset date; the workspace keeps working

The system never silently downgrades quality. It either bills you at the same rate or stops new calls.

Org-level vs. user-level#

For teams, billing happens at the Org level. The Org owns the plan; the AI budget is shared by all members. Usage shows up in the Admin Dashboard split by user, by Agent, and by Workflow.

For individual users without an Org, billing is on your personal account.

Invoice history#

All paid invoices are accessible in Settings → Billing → Invoice history. Download as PDF for accounting.

Larger teams & enterprise#

For larger teams (50+) that need:

  • Custom contracts
  • Volume pricing
  • Invoice billing (instead of credit card)
  • SAML / SSO
  • SCIM provisioning
  • Priority support / dedicated account manager

Tips#

  • Watch the Admin Dashboard's usage graph in your first month — it usually identifies the right plan within two weeks.
  • Power users often run on Pay As You Go because they prefer paying actual usage to a flat fee.
  • Self-hosted with local Ollama is the most cost-efficient path for teams with significant AI consumption — flat hardware cost instead of per-token billing.
