How AI usage works#
River AI usage is metered in River AI dollars. Each plan includes a monthly budget that resets on your billing date. The Free plan includes a one-time starter budget.
When you go over your plan's budget, usage stops until the next cycle — or you can switch to Pay As You Go to keep going without upgrading.
What happens when I reach my limit?#
When you exhaust your included monthly budget, you have two options:
Switch to Pay As You Go — Add a card and continue at the same public rates with no monthly fee. Usage is billed at the end of each month. There is no degradation in model quality or speed.
Upgrade your plan — Move to a higher tier (Basic → Standard → Premium) for a larger monthly budget that resets automatically.
Requests are never downgraded in quality or speed when you run out. River stops new AI calls and prompts you to top up or upgrade.
Teams and orgs#
Every River plan supports unlimited team members from Basic onward. Teams share a single subscription under one org — there is no per-seat charge.
An org admin can invite members, manage integrations, and view shared spaces. Usage is pooled across the org's monthly budget.
For larger teams that need custom contracts, priority support, SAML/SSO, SCIM provisioning, or invoice billing, contact us.
AI model tiers#
River exposes four AI tiers rather than individual model names. Each tier maps to the best available model for that performance level and updates automatically as models improve.

The Expert and Genius tiers are available on Pay As You Go and all paid plans. The Free plan includes Fastest only.
Basic includes a longer context window; Standard and above unlock the maximum context window for all models.
Max Mode#
Max Mode extends the context window from the default 200K tokens to 1M tokens for supported models. A larger context window lets River hold more of your conversation history, open documents, and workspace context in mind at once — leading to better results on long or complex tasks.
Max Mode is available on Expert and Genius tiers. It is not available on Fastest or Uncensored, where the underlying model does not support the extended window.
Toggle Max Mode from the flame icon (🔥) in the SpaceChat input bar. It requires a Basic plan or above — free accounts will see an upgrade prompt.
Because Max Mode sends significantly more tokens per request, it consumes your AI budget faster than a standard request at the same model tier. There is no separate charge for enabling it; it draws from your normal monthly budget at the same per-token rates.
Billing details#
Paid plans are billed monthly in USD and renew automatically. Cancel anytime from Settings → Billing. By subscribing you agree to River's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
