One quarter, end to end: the administrator's package in, the figures transcribed with sources, the quarter's log read, the draft out.

Quarterly LP Letter

This space does one job. It assumes your books are already closed by someone else — an administrator, an accountant, a controller — and that what you are holding is a package of final numbers and a blank page.

Getting started

There is no setup form and no import format. Bring whatever you already have — last quarter's letter as a Word file, a PDF from your administrator, a folder of board decks, a note on your phone that says “Kestrel raised, Tidewater dead.” Messy is fine and partial is fine. The workspace only needs context: the agent reads what you give it, files it into the folders below, fills in the docs and sheets, and asks about whatever is missing rather than guessing.

Once your desktop opens, paste straight into the chat or drag files onto the desktop. Both work, and you can keep adding as things arrive during the quarter.

Then, roughly in this order:

  1. Run Learn My Letter Voice on the last letter or two you sent. It fills the Letter Style Guide with your actual voice and disclosure block, seeds Company One-Liners, and back-fills prior figures. Highest-value fifteen minutes in the space.
  2. Fill in Fund Snapshot. Short on purpose. The useful field is the one asking who actually reads these letters.
  3. Hit Portfolio Logger the day you hear something. One sentence becomes a sourced entry. This is the habit that turns letter day into letter hour.
  4. When the package arrives, run Log the Quarter's Numbers, then Draft the Quarterly Letter, then Pre-Send Check.

What it checks

TVPI against DPI plus RVPI. The NAV walk footing. Beginning NAV against last quarter's ending NAV. Called capital against the schedule. Every figure that appears twice in the package agreeing with itself. When something does not tie, it reports both figures with both sources and stops — it will not pick the one that looks right, and it will not wave a difference through as rounding.

What it will not do

  • Calculate, produce, verify, or audit a figure
  • Resolve a discrepancy inside your administrator's package
  • Put a number in a letter without a source, or a write-off in a schedule without a sentence
  • Send anything. Every letter is a draft for counsel and compliance to review.

If you close the books yourself

Use Fund CFO instead. That pack rolls NAV forward, marks the portfolio, reconciles capital accounts, and drafts the letter as its final step. You do not want both.

Every number, and where it came from

Fictional fund. Real behavior — including the figure the package did not contain.

Letter Style GuideYour voice, measured from letters you already sent — not described in adjectives.
Portfolio NotesLogged the day it happened, with sensitivity set conservatively.
Figure ChecksBoth figures reported, neither one chosen. The discrepancy goes back.
Pre-Send CheckThe read your sharpest LP’s analyst is about to give it.

Common questions

How is this different from the Fund CFO workspace?

The Fund CFO pack is for people who run the close themselves — rolling NAV forward, marking the portfolio, reconciling capital accounts — and drafts the letter as the last step. This pack assumes all of that already happened somewhere else and does only the letter. Use one or the other, not both.

Does it calculate my performance figures?

No, deliberately. TVPI, DPI, RVPI, IRR, NAV, called capital, and distributions are taken exactly as your administrator delivered them. If the package omits a figure, the letter says pending rather than deriving it. What it does do is check those figures against each other and against last quarter.

What if I have never written an LP letter?

The first letter comes from the built-in template, you edit it into something that sounds like you, and then you run Learn My Letter Voice on that letter. From the second quarter on, every draft is written against your own voice. It will not fabricate a style guide or a disclosure block you never agreed to.

Does it work with my administrator’s format?

Yes. Upload the capital account statements, the financial statements, a performance summary, or a portal export — whatever they send. There is no integration to configure. It records which document and which page each figure came from.

What does it do between quarters?

Portfolio Logger turns one sentence into a sourced entry with a sensitivity flag. Portfolio Watch scans weekly for public news that would belong in a letter. Quarter-End Countdown tells you what is missing as the deadline approaches, including which companies have gone quiet.

Do I need to pay to use it?

You need a free account. The link on this page takes you to sign up, then provisions a fully configured workspace you can keep. No paid plan required to start.

River is an independent drafting workspace. It is not a fund administrator, an auditor, an accountant, an attorney, or an investment adviser, and nothing it produces is accounting, audit, tax, legal, or investment advice. It does not calculate, produce, verify, or audit any financial figure — it transcribes the figures your administrator delivers, records where each came from, and checks them for internal consistency. Every fund, LP, portfolio company, and figure shown on this page is fictional and provided for illustration only. Your administrator's records govern, your auditor's review controls, and every valuation is the general partner's determination. LP communications should be reviewed by fund counsel and compliance before they are sent, and nothing here is an offer to sell or a solicitation to buy any security. If you produce your own fund financials, see River for fund CFOs instead. By using River you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
